It turns out there is a familial connection between the first two Deer Park girls basketball teams to make state in school history.

Taylor Lyons, a junior on the 2019-20 Stags—the second girl’s squad to qualify ever—is the daughter of Brooke Gardner Lyons, a player on the first team to do so 30 years ago. Taylor said that when she was younger, she would write “State 2020” on pieces of paper and drawings. “It was something I definitely thought about when I was little,” Taylor said. “It’s cool it actually happened in 2020.”

The mother-daughter duo now eagerly awaits the placement of “2020” on the girl’s basketball state banner in the gymnasium at Deer Park High School. “It’s pretty special that our numbers are going to be up there together,” Brooke said.
