80 Years Ago

Ruth Roye and her high school mount, “Red Beauty,” are one of the many features with Sello Bros. big three-ring circus coming to Deer Park on Aug. 5. Among other features of the show are Jo Ann and her four-ton pachyderm “Big Burma,” the oldest living elephant in America. Miss Georgia Lake, world’s famous lady of the flying trapeze; the Silver Lakes, comedy bar act; the Mosers, double trapeze artists; Jean Ellens, dog and pony steeplechase; Roy Bible’s Arabian liberty horses; Walt Bromlee’s Hollywood clown jesters; Ruth Roye’s nine wonders; Al Napies, knife thrower and sharp shooter; trained animals; and a horned horse. 

One of the largest crowds ever to attend the annual North Spokane and South Stevens County Settlers Association picnic, gathered in Deer Park on July 25, to observe the 25^th anniversary of the association. 

A new Cessna 140 deluxe airplane is to be delivered to Eleanor Frederick of the Deer Park Flying Service tomorrow. The plane will be used for instruction, charter, and passenger service. 

40 Years Ago

A local band, Destiny, inaugurated Deer Park’s concerts in the park program July 25 with six hours of rock music that vibrated through the west end of town. Unfortunately, the concert ended on a sour note with a visit by the Spokane County Sheriff’s Department. The deputies were called into Mix Park at about 11:30 p.m. to break up the concert that went more than four hours past the designated quitting time. 

Deer Park, which was able to withstand the 65^th annual Settlers Day, had a harder time with the ensuing vandalism. An inventory of destruction by City Administrator Ehman Sheldon included a missing picnic table at Mix Park, broken restroom doors at Swinyard Park, and defaced stop signs at the corner of Main Street and Crawford Avenue. 

United Parcel Service (UPS) will begin using Deer Park Municipal Airport on successive weekends as the site of a driver training program beginning Aug. 16, according to David Baer, UPS real estate manager for the northwest region and Ehman Sheldon, city administrator. Under the terms of the UPS-city agreement, UPS will be required to pay $100 per day for each day the training site located off Missile Site Road is used. 

20 Years Ago 

A 25-year-old Deer Park man, wanted for the attempted murder of his brother on July 25, was arrested two days later after a brief standoff with deputies outside a Deer Park business. Christopher Olsen had been sought by deputies since an incident about 7:30 p.m. on July 25 when he fired a pistol at the head of his 35-year-old brother. 

Army National Guard Pvt. Bradley A. Harper, son of Grey and Kayanne Harper of Deer Park, has graduated from the Power-Generation Equipment Repairer Advanced Individual Training (AIT) course at the Aberdeen Proving Ground. During AIT, Harper was trained to perform unit, direct support, or general support maintenance functions on power-generation equipment. 

Area voters will have plenty of candidates to choose from as last week’s filing period drew plenty of political aspirants. In Spokane County, a large number of candidates will force September primary elections for the Republican nominee for sheriff between Ozzie Knezovich and Cal Walker with the winner facing Democrat James Flavel in November.
