August Westby, rural mail carrier at Clayton, was found dead beneath a car he had been repairing at the Christine Cowan home near Clayton, late Saturday afternoon. He had apparently been working under the car when the jack slipped, allowing the car to fall on him.
Dr. Hal C. Long, father of Mrs. Harry R. Dahm of Deer Park, passed away at his home in Spokane July 31. Dr. Long was well known in Deer Park, Chewelah, and surrounding country due to his active participation in the work of the Townsend plan.
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Wells of Spokane were callers at Lumbago Ranch Tuesday afternoon, just making sure of a well-filled chicken chassis for the picnic, I guess!

The Owen family – the folks who brought you the Owen Pioneer Museum – kicked off its second century as Chattaroy residents with a reception on Sunday. Betty Owen Shadduck and her husband, Glen, and her brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Alice Owen of Newport, are the museum-keepers responsible for the upkeep and continual expansion of the complex.
Having heard the song last year, the Deer Park City Council was able to add a few bright notes to this year’s edition of the insurance blues. The council last Wednesday, with the elimination of auto liability and damage coverage (the city’s vehicles are already insured under a separate policy), agreed to a one-year policy from Marinco for $31,000.
The people of Little Diomede Island, located on the treeless tundra of the Polar region, will have a Christmas tree this year, thanks to a Deer Park tree farm and the tireless efforts of a Deer Park man.

A suspect’s wild driving drew the attention of a Spokane County Sheriff’s deputy who chased the 22-year-old Chattaroy man down and arrested him for possessing a stolen motorcycle.
More than a year ago, the Deer Park Tribune put its big toe into cyberspace with the creation of a newspaper webpage. That effort, that only can be described as “tentative,” was informational, telling people how they could place a classified ad, advertising rates, and email addresses for the Tribune staff.
Thieves struck a Colbert business on July 31/Aug. 1 and made off with the business’s computer system. A Harvest House employee told Deputy Brett Pierson that the suspects gained entry into the story through an unlocked window.
