The Rev. C. Elliot Gardner of Bangor, Mich., called on friends in Loon Lake Monday, enroute to Chewelah where he will spend his vacation. He was formerly pastor of the Congregational Church there and also served the Loon Lake Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred L. Alberthal celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary Sunday when nearly 20 friends dropped in with a picnic dinner.
Opening day for the Deer Park, Clayton, and Loon Lake schools will be Sept. 3, the day after Labor Day. Record enrollments are anticipated in all the schools. Crowding is likely to be especially acute at the Deer Park grade building, where already overflowing classes are expected to be further taxed by the influx.

The concept of a farmers market will at last be a reality this weekend, according to civic activist Mary Weaver who envisions the market as the “kick-off for the Main Street USA project.” Farmers and gardeners who want to sell their produce at the market need only to show up and sell it, Weaver said.
A 19-year-old Deer Park man was accidentally killed last Friday morning when he was electrocuted trying to extinguish a small brush fire north of town. Josh McAdam, who was employed by the Department of Natural Resources, apparently stepped on a live wire while trying to put out a fire on Sherman Road.
A brand new bicycle belonging to a 10-year-old Elk youth, which he’s paid for with money he’d earned doing odd jobs during the summer, was stolen from his front porch last week. Brian Stevens’ bike is a Sigma model by Huffy.

Longtime Deer Park residents Ron and Margery Aubrey celebrated their 80th birthdays with a dual surprise party at the Salty Dog Restaurant. The Aubreys, who will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this fall, have three children and four grandchildren.
Every boy wants a dog. Tyson Thompson needs one. The 4-year-old Thompson, the son of Ellie Thompson and great-grandson of Dorothy and the late Al Tyson of Deer Park, suffers from a severe form of epilepsy and cerebral palsy, and needs a dog to help him with his day-to-day activities.
State fire officials continue to search for clues to the cause of a fire on Aug. 8 near Valley that consumed more than 450 acres and almost two dozen buildings, including four homes. Preliminary reports said the fire was started by a woman who let a trash fire get out of control.
