80 Years Ago

The Cozy Inn has been sold to Henry D. Cox of Moses Lake, owner Horace Bowles announced this week. Cox will take possession as soon as the Liquor Board approves the transfer of the beer and wine license. 

Floyd G. Smith and G.T. White, who have operated an aircraft repair station at the local airport the past year, have leased the port from the town of Deer Park and taken over its operation. Mrs. Eleanor Frederick formerly operated the port and conducted a flying school there. 

Charter night for the newly-formed Deer Park Kiwanis club will be held Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. Nearly 300 Kiwanians, their wives, and guests are expected for the gala dinner party and program.

With this year’s football players already hitting the sleds, the Riverside School Board has tightened the rules governing drugs, alcohol and tobacco, and academic performance for athletes. The penalties for possession or use of alcohol, drugs, or tobacco is four weeks suspension from interscholastic events or until the end of the season in which the athlete is participating, whichever is longer. The second offense is banishment from interscholastic activities for the remainder of the school year. 

Janet Getchell of Deer Park, along with 10 other Linfield College of Oregon students, will be studying overseas this fall in San Jose, Costa Rica. She will be attending the University of Costa Rica and living with a Costa Rican family to help acquaint her and her classmates with Costa Rican culture. 

Thanks to our Spokane County commissioners, we now have the funds to begin the phase one study for the restoration of Eloika Lake. The grant of $4,500 comes as a result of the meeting the lake association and the commissioners had on Aug. 4. A slide presentation put together by Sheldon and Tammy Magnuson showed the lake as it used to be and as it has become. 

20 Years Ago 

Rebuffed in an attempt to meet with Deer Park city officials, Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich held a town hall meeting at Deer Park City Hall. Knezovich said he has not been able to have a face-to-face meeting with Mayor Robert Whisman since he was appointed sheriff four months ago. No city officials attended the meeting, which attracted only a dozen interested citizens. 

Pauline’s Place at E 4 Crawford, open since Aug. 4 is making a rapidly growing impact on the hungry stomachs around Deer Park. Owner Pauline Sellers, who has five years of experience at Chattaroy Hills Restaurant, is excited about the opening of her new business. 

Former Deer Park Pee Wee Rodeo Queen Ashley Benedict will compete for the 2007 Miss Teen Rodeo Washington title this weekend in Ellensburg. The 18-year-old Benedict, daughter of Mary Yount of Chattaroy and Eric Benedict of Spokane and a 2006 East Valley High School graduate, is the current Palouse Empire Rodeo Association Queen.
