Clayton Woman Faces Long Recovery After Loose Wheel Strikes Her at Deer Park Coffee Stand

A Clayton woman who was seriously injured when a wheel broke free from a passing vehicle and struck her outside a Deer Park coffee stand is recovering after surgery and thanking the community for an outpouring of support. Hannah M. Petty, 34, was working the morning of Sept. 1 at Rozy’z Hot Shotz when the unusual accident occurred near Highway 395 and Cleve- land Road. According to a Washington State Patrol (WSP) press memo, a white 2005 Honda Pilot driven by Danyail K. Shellhouse, 35, of Chewelah was traveling southbound on Highway 395 just north of Cleveland Road at approximately 8:40 a.m. when one of its wheels came off the vehicle.

The wheel traveled across a parking lot and struck Petty, who was outside the nearby coffee stand. WSP listed mechanical failure as the cause of the collision and said drugs or alcohol were not involved. Shellhouse was listed in the WSP memo as facing a charge of operating defective equip- ment. Petty was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center for treatment. In a Facebook update following the accident, Petty’s mother, Rana Hartley-Vee, said her daughter had stepped outside the coffee stand to tape a poster to a window when the wheel came loose.

“The tire flew off the car, rolled and bounced, and literally missed everything in its path, except Hannah,”Hartley-Vee wrote. She said the impact knocked Petty approximately 10 feet to the ground. According to Hartley-Vee, Petty suffered a fractured left femur near the knee, including in an area that had previously been broken, along with fractures involving her pelvis and sacrum. Her mother also reported that Petty suffered an arterial injury that resulted in internal bleeding and a large hematoma in her chest.

Petty was initially being treated in the intensive care unit while medical staff monitored her blood levels for further bleeding, according to the family. Petty later provided her own updates on Facebook, describing the accident as a “weird, scary situation” and sharing details of the surgery doctors planned to perform. “I already have a titanium rod in my leg, so they will be placing screws in my femur and my pelvis,” Petty wrote before surgery. Despite the pain and uncertainty, Petty said the community response had helped carry her through the first days after the accident. “The messages, texts, kindness, and comments have really pulled me through the last few days,”

Petty wrote. “I feel immensely blessed to have my family, my man, friends, my Rozy’z Hot Shotz family, and the Deer Park community by my side.” Petty added, “It’s a long road to re- covery, and I appreciate you all more than you know.” Hartley-Vee also credited Petty’s boss, customers, bystanders, and emer- gency medical personnel with quickly helping her daughter following the collision.

Rozy’z Hot Shotz shared an update with customers after receiving Petty’s permission. “Our sweet, sassy Hannah had an absolutely terrifying freak accident while working at our Deer Park stand today,” the business wrote. “We know so many of our customers and members of our Deer Park community love this woman and have been reaching out, checking in, and asking how she’s doing.” The business asked the community to keep supporting Petty as she recov- ers. “Your entire Rozy’z coffee family is behind you,” the business wrote.
