The Deer Park Rotary Club’s annual petunia sale on May 9 raised approximately $1,000, according to President Merrilee Shulz. All proceeds directly fund local Rotary service projects and scholarships, she noted. Shulz said they source their flowers locally. “Doug Lilly has had a greenhouse called ‘There She Grows;’ they also own the green- houses behind the (Deer Park) high school. They grow petunias for the Chamber of Commerce as well.” According to Shulz, the sale benefits the Rotary scholarship fund, where $6,000 is awarded across six scholarships: three for academics and three for vocational training. Speaking to past projects the Rotary funded, Shulz said, “We funded the One School, One Book program for Chattaroy Elementary Schooland bought all of the shirts for that as well.” The program focuses on getting the students to collectively read one book, according to Shulz. Staff, admin and families all participated as well.
