A new playground designed specifically for preschool-aged children officially opened May 8 at the Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) center at Deer Park School District, providing expanded opportunities for outdoor play, sensory exploration, and inclusive learning experiences. According to Hayley Maxfield, Deer Park Elementary assistant principal, discussions about improving the ECEAP preschool playground began quite some time ago. Serious planning started in the spring of 2025, Maxfield said, when the opportunity arose to apply for a Child Care Complex Needs Fund grant through Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families to support the expansion project. The project became a collaborative effort involving ECEAP staff, the district office, maintenance supervisors, and school administration, all working together to create a safe and engaging outdoor space for students and the Deer Park community. The project officially moved forward after the grant was approved in the fall of 2025. “Outdoor play is an essential part of early childhood development,” Maxfield said. “It supports physical growth, social-emotional learning, problem-solving, creativity, and communication skills. Outdoor environments also encourage children to build confidence, practice cooperation, and explore the world through active, hands-on experiences.” Maxfield explained that the ECEAP program has grown significantly over the past several years, and the previous playground no longer provided enough opportunities for active play and movement for all students. Maxfield said the expanded playground gives students more room for movement and exploration. She added that sensory walls and musical instruments help create an inclusive environment for all learners at Deer Park ECEAP. “The expanded grassy area also gives students more room to run, play games, and engage in cooperative outdoor activities,” she said. “It is important to provide high-quality outdoor learning environments that support children's physical development, creativity, social-emotional growth, and inclusive play experiences. This investment demonstrates the district's dedication to creating engaging and developmentally appropriate spaces that help all young learners,” Maxfield added. Although the previous play structure remains safe and continues to be an important part of the outdoor play area, Maxfield said it did not fully meet the growing needs of students for movement, sensory exploration, and inclusive play opportunities. “The decision to expand the playground was not due to safety concerns,” Maxfield said, “but rather the growing needs of the ECEAP program.” She continued, “As enrollment increased, there was a need for additional play structures and more opportunities for students to engage in active, large motor, and inclusive play experiences. The new playground expansion allows more children to play comfortably and safely while supporting the developmental needs of all learners.” The administration and staff said they hope the new playground creates positive experiences for students for years to come. “Our goal is for students to feel included, active, engaged, and excited to learn through play. We also hope it supports their physical, social, emotional, and sensory development for years to come. In addition, we hope this playground will continue to benefit not only ECEAP students but also students across the Deer Park School District and the greater Deer Park community by providing a welcoming, inclusive space for children to learn, grow, and connect,” Maxfield said. Construction moved forward smoothly, helped in part by favorable weather conditions. “The school was fortunate throughout this project and did not face any major challenges during the approval or construction process,” Maxfield said. She noted that a mild winter helped crews stay on schedule and complete the project in time for students to begin enjoying it in May. “Like many construction projects, there were some scheduling and coordination challenges, but the project team, contractors, and employees worked hard to keep progress moving and complete the playground as safely and efficiently as possible,” she said. “One of the most memorable moments has been watching students immediately begin exploring every feature together, especially the sensory and musical elements, while laughing and fully engaging in play,” Maxfield commented. “This project demonstrates a commitment to supporting young children and families in Deer Park by providing safe, engaging, and inclusive spaces where children can learn and grow through play.”
