Deer Park Soccer Enters Season with Back-to-Back Wins

The Deer Park Lady Stags soccer team, based on the number of returning starters, has the most experienced group in the 2A Greater Spokane League. Combine that returning experience with some impactful freshman and you have a team that has started the season 3-0, allowing only one goal. One of those impact-making freshmen, Sam Cosner, was involved in all three goals on Sept. 8 against Shadle Park at One Spokane Stadium.

She had two goals and assisted on the third. Ava Reed tallied the third goal and had an assist. The Deer Park defenders kept traffic in front of goalkeepers Brooklyn Jacobs and Avery Mitchell to a minimum, outshooting the Highlanders 8-3. Two days later they made their home debut against Riverside, playing back in the high school stadium for the first time since 2021.

Cosner got the scoring started with five minutes gone on an assist from Amaia Breneman. Cosner would finish with two goals and a pair of assists. Freshman Falina Breneman was top scorer with three goals. Reed also tallied twice in the Lady Stags 8-1 triumph. Deer Park goalkeepers faced only a pair of shots while firing 29 from their offensive side. Riverside hosted Newport on Sept. 8. The visiting Grizzlies netted the first three goals and went on to win 5-2. Layla Baker scored both goals for the Rams.

Deer Park is home against Cheney on Wednesday, Sept. 16, playing under the lights at 6:30 p.m. Riverside hosted Rogers on Tuesday, Sept. 15, with results unavailable at press time and are scheduled to host Pullman Thursday, Sept. 17, at 4 p.m.
