Defense of their Greater Spokane League 2A title began with an 81-run barrage in three opening week games for the Deer Park Lady Stags softball team.

They opened their new field at the high school on March 19 against Rogers; the visitors from Hillyard learned quickly that this group scores in bunches. Following a four-run first inning, Deer Park would pile on 16 runs in their next two at-bats on their way to a 23-1 win.

Sophomore Kapri Bailey, already a three-time all-league softball pick between slow pitch and fast pitch, claimed the honor of the first fast pitch home run at the new field. She would finish with three hits, driving in four. Emme Bogle crossed the plate five times and drove in four.  Jillian Marshall, Hailey Thompson, and Hailee Orgill each scored three times, with Thompson also driving in three.

The first road trip of the season took the team to North Central on March 21, and it took little time for the offensive merry-go-round to be put into motion. Deer Park would plate 14 runs in the opening frame, on their way to a 25-3 triumph.

Orgill, Lucy Lathrop, and Bailey would each collect two hits, with Orgill scoring four times and Lathrop three. Marshall and Ally Ellingson would each score three times as well. Bailey had two hits, including a triple.

The start was faster and more furious in game two against the Wolfpack. The Lady Stags would score 26 runs in the opening two frames on their way to winning 33-0.

Lathrop drove in eight with a pair of long balls and three two-baggers. She ended with five hits and five runs scored. Bogle drove in six with two doubles while scoring three times. Marshall scored three runs, drove in four, and totaled two doubles and a home run. Cheyenne Thomas had four hits and drove in an equal number. Mady Ellingson scored four runs, and her sister Leah scored three times and drove in three.

Deer Park played at East Valley on Tuesday, with results unavailable prior to press time. They are on the road to Milwood to face West Valley on Saturday, March 28, at noon.
