From Assignment to Layout: Students Go Behind the Scenes at the Tribune

Deer Park Homelink students in Tracy Tobeck’s academic co-op English class visited the Deer Park Tribune at 19 N. Main St. in Deer Park on May 6 to discuss newswriting and the importance of community journalism. Editor Cami Krema spoke to the students about topics that are covered in the weekly paper, how to write in an objective, neutral tone, and assigning stories to writers. Krema also showed the steps of how a story gets published; from assignment to layout. The students talked about times they had been featured in the Deer Park Tribune for activities such as school sports or for showing animals at local fairs and shared that they were excited to have their pictures in the paper again.
