In the Lady Stags doubleheader against Clarkston on April 3, it was a well-placed bunt that stopped approximately halfway between home plate and the pitcher’s mound that helped Deer Park keep their perfect record intact. Deer Park rallied to win 8-7 over Clarkston, scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The rally was ignited by freshman Leah Ellingson with a single. Jillian Marshall and Emme Bogle followed suit with one run scoring on the Bogle hit. Lucy Lathrop doubled in another tally and moved to third on a passed ball that allowed Bogle to score the equalizer. With the score knotted, head coach Dana Shaw rolled the dice with a squeeze bunt call that caught the Bantams flat footed. Lathrop slid head first across home plate to cap the comeback.
Kapri Bailey would finish with three hits, two of them doubles. Lathrop scored twice with two hits including a double. Bogle drove in a pair while Marshall had two runs scored, two hits including a double. The Lady Stags backed the pitching of Mady Ellingson and Hailey Thompson with error-free defense.
In the opening game against Clarkston, the Deer Park bats did their damage early and often, with 17 runs in the first three innings on their way to a 17-5 victory.
The biggest run producer was freshman Ally Ellingson, who drove in five, four on a grand slam home run. Older sister Mady crossed the plate three times. Lathrop scored four times while Bailey had a homer and drove in three. Bogle toted a solid stat line of two runs scored, two hits being a double and homer. Marshall scored twice on two hits including a double with two runs driven in. Pitcher Thompson aided her cause with two hits and two runs batted in.
The week had begun on March 31, with a trip to Pullman for a matchup of unbeaten squads. The Evans Computer Rankings ranked Pullman fifth and Deer Park seventh. That will likely change when the next rankings are released as the Lady Stags made quick work of the Greyhounds 16-0.
Thompson went the distance pitching with eight strikeouts to only one walk. Lathrop doubled and homered, scoring three and driving in a pair. Bogle scored three runs, with two hits and drove in three. Her hits included a double and triple. Bailey left the yard for one of her three hits as she drove in four. Thompson again aided her own cause with two hits that drove in two. Hailee Orgill scored twice, with two hits including a three bagger. Marshall had two hits, Cheyenne Thomas scored twice and Mady Ellingson homered.
With the first half of their Greater Spokane League 2A season behind them, the Lady Stags are off until they host Rogers for a doubleheader on April 18.
