Riverside High School freshman Amethyst Bischoff has been accepted into the Emerging Rural Leaders program at the University of Chicago. This selective national opportunity is designed to cultivate leadership and civic engagement among students from rural and small-town communities.

Amethyst Bischoff, a freshman at Riverside High School, has been accepted into the Emerging Rural Leaders – 9th Cohort program at the University of Chicago. The one-week program introduces students to leadership and civic discourse through a range of academic and social perspectives.

Initially, Bischoff didn't realize how competitive the program was. "I figured since it was a national program that I wouldn't have much of a chance," she said. Her AP English teacher, Sheila Alami, noted that the achievement reflects both individual excellence and the strength of the school community.

Bischoff credits her counselor and teachers for helping her through the application process, where she learned to navigate recommendation letters and transcripts. Her interest in leadership developed through community involvement, including volunteering at Second Harvest and participating in school service days.

Looking ahead, Bischoff is eager to experience college life and learn about entrepreneurship. She hopes to bring her knowledge back to Riverside to encourage other students to pursue similar summer programs. "Don't second guess yourself," she advised. "Take the dive, see if it's something you want, and if not, you'll learn a lesson."
