Local Track Competitors Find Multiple Podium Finishes

Local track and field squads competed in league meets as well as a weekend invitational last week.

Riverside was the first to take on a league foe, hosting Medical Lake on April 21, where the girls sprinters continued to shine. Ruby Schneider and Athena Jones finished second and third in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes, with Jones adding a win in the shot put. They were joined by Delilah Ceparano and Ava Montgomery to win the 4x100 relay. Ceparano also placed second at 200 meters. Alyssa Riek was a double winner (300 meter hurdles and high jump) and placed second in the 100 meter hurdles. Running event placers included Faith Jackson (second place, 3,200 meters) and the quartet of Miaha Lang, Phia Wenzl, Brynlee McNamee, and Hailey Lee who won the 4x200 meter relay. McNamee added a third place in the 100 meter hurdles. Reagan Gwiazda won the discus, and placed third in the shot put. Gracie Roddick added second place finishes in the discus and javelin while Jordyn Heinecke was third in both the javelin and pole vault. Ella Coston was second in the long jump and third in the triple jump while Ajah Helm won the pole vault.

Triston Lebsack headlined the Riverside boys against Medical Lake with wins in the shot put and discus. Marcus Oergel (200 meters and high jump), and Mikah Coleman (100 meters and shot put) each had a pair of second place finishes, while Gavin Hurst won first in pole vaulting and third in the long jump. Maxwell Motteshard placed second in the pole vault and third in the high jump. Landon Edwards won the 100 meter dash while David Parker took top honors in the javelin. Rounding out the boys scorers were: Caysen Taylor (third place, 200 meters), Javantae Chambers (second place, 200 meters), Liam Hart (third place, 800 meters), Will Himlie (second place, discus), and Michael Turner (second place, javelin).

At the Timberlake Invitational on April 25 in Spirit Lake, Idaho, Schneider again proved herself, earning the title in the 100 meter dash. She teamed with Montgomery, Ceparano, and Jones to win the 4x100 meter relay.  Jones added third-place finishes in the 200 meters and shot put, and placed sixth in the 100 meters. Montgomery was fourth in the 100 meters. Ceparano, Riek, Schneider, and Montgomery placed second in the 4x400 meter relay. The quartet of Lang, Wenzl, McNamee, and Coston placed third in the 4x200 meter relay. Riek won the high jump, and placed fourth in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles; meanwhile, Lang earned eighth in the 200 meters and ninth in the 400 meters. Other top 10 finishes in running included Wenzl (10th place, 400 meters), Jackson, (10th place, 1,600 meters), and McNamee (eighth place, 100 meter hurdles). Helm placed second in the pole vault. Roddick and Gwiazda placed sixth and 10th in javelin.

The Riverside boys performances in Spirit Lake were headlined by David Parker’s first-place win in the javelin. The 4x400 relay of Oergel, Parker, Chambers, and Taegen Hart placed third. Hart also placed fifth in the 3,200 meters, and Oergel ninth at 200 meters. Rounding out top 10 marks were Hurst (sixth place, pole vault), and Ethan Turner (ninth place, 3,200 meters), with Lebsack and Coleman taking ninth and 10th in the shot put.  

Deer Park opened their Greater Spokane League 2A schedule at North Central against the host Wolfpack and East Valley on April 22. Jacey Boesel was a two-event winner (800 meters and long jump). Mattison Wainwright achieved first place in shot put, and second in high jump and 100 meter hurdles. Unified athlete Isabelle Taylor placed first in the 100 meters and third in the shot put. Emma Bryant placed second in the 100 and 200 meter sprints. The unified shot put was swept by Deer Park as Sophia Phillips and Jazmine Lewis went 1-2. Other notable finishes were Kaelin Newsom (first place, 3,200 meters), Myah DeSalles (second place, triple jump), and Sienna Breneman (third place, 800 meters).

In the boys meet, Tommy Allison was third in the 100 meter dash and won the unified shot put. He teamed with Kyle Naccarato, Kale Blades, and Chance Taylor to win the 4x100 meter relay. Blades added a runner up finish at 100 meters. Taylor and Naccarato teamed with Keith Schick and Chase Bates to win the 4x400 meter relay. The mixed unified sprint medley relay team of Phillips, Lewis, Darrin McCanne, and Frankie Allsion placed first. Frankie Allison added the title in the unified 100 meter dash and McCanna was second in the unified shot put. Taylor added a second place finish in the 300 meter hurdles to his relay placings. Rounding out boys scorers were Kason Dean (third place, 800 meters), Caleb Diaz (second place, javelin), and Ethan Fuhrman (second place, triple jump).

At the Mooberry Relays, April 25, at Rogers High School, Boesel again took top honors achieving her season’s best mark of 17-1. She teamed with Riley Blades, Sienna Breneman, and Newsom to finish sixth in the distance medley relay. Wainwright was a three-event placer (eighth in javelin, ninth in shot put, and ninth in high jump), while Bates placed seventh in the 300 meter hurdles.

Riverside is scheduled to host Colville on Wednesday, April 29, while Deer Park runs at West Valley. The Stags will travel to Royal City for the Vanderholm Invitational on Saturday, May 2.
