Local Volleyball Teams Experience First Wins

A first league win and another first victory of the season highlighted play last week on the local volleyball courts. Riverside got their first win of the fall cam- paign on Sept. 17 when the Rams outlasted North Central of the 2A Greater Spokane League in a five set marathon at Riverside. The final set went beyond the 15 points required to win as the Rams prevailed 19- 17.


A two-point margin is required to win each set. Julianna Winterroth guided the Riverside offense with 22 assists. Frequently on the receiving end of her pass- es was Sienna Helm who tallied 16 kills. Helm added three blocks as did Makenna Distad. The Rams welcomed Liberty of the Northeast 2B League to Chattaroy on Sept. 15 and the visitors from Spangle prevailed 3-0. Winterroth had nine kills and Reagan Gwiazda had eight digs.


Northwest Christian played at Riverside on Sept. 19. The Crusaders would win in three sets, with Riverside holding leads in the second and third sets before falling. No statistics were available at press time. One match on the docket for the Rams this week is a Wednesday, Sept. 23, 6:30 p.m. matchup with Newport.


Deer Park picked up a win in their Greater Spokane League 2A opener on Sept. 15, downing Rogers 3-1. After the home team took the first two sets, the visitors from Hillyard found their stride and took set three. Momentum was on the side of the Pirates early in set four before Deer Park righted their ship for the matching clinching-set win.


Autumn Marich had eight kills and 14 digs, while Hailee Orgill equaled her kill total. Avaree Ingwaldson dished out 22 assists and Raylee Libert had three blocks. Deer Park then trav- eled to face Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) top-ranked Pullman on Sept. 17 and fell 3-0. Sophia Loft had 11 digs, Orgill tallied six kills, and Ingwaldson had 13 assists and four aces. Deer Park played at Lakeside on Tuesday, Sept. 22, with results un- available at press time, and will host Clarkston at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24. Lakeside volleyball traveled to Pullman on Sept. 15.


While managing to take one set from the 2A top ranked Greyhounds, the Eagles fell 3-1. Neely Pedersen handed out 28 assists and McKenna Almond had 26 digs. Bella To- beck had 11 kills, Harper Christen six blocks, and Layla Jones four aces. Northwest Christian entered the week ranked second in the WIAA RPI rankings.


The Crusaders outlasted Newport in five sets on Sept. 15. Izzy Robins’ 22 kills combined with the 22 assists of Camille Greenup led the way. Two nights later, a state semifinal rematch on the road awaited with a trip to Reardan for a matchup with the Screaming Eagles. The home side would prevail in four sets, 3-1. Polly Getman had 22 kills. Kelsey Bell had a stat line of 20 assists and five aces, while Greenup had 11 digs. Northwest Christian played host to St. Georges on Tuesday, Sept. 22, with results unavailable at press time.
