In typical eightman football style, the Springdale and Cusick football squads lit up the scoreboard at Mary Walker High School on Oct. 2, combining for 136 points as the visiting Panthers came out on top 86-50. Trailing 20-8 late in the opening quarter, Springdale turned to freshman running back Zach Gillman to draw the Chargers closer on a seven-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion by quarterback Marc Andrew.
Following a defensive stop, the Chargers needed only three plays to cover 71 yards and reach the end zone. Junior running back Jonas Dean covered the final 65, and Andrew added another two-point conversion run for a 24-20 Springdale advantage. The visitors from Pend Oreille County then scored on four consecutive possessions to go into halftime leading 48- 24. Following a pair of Panthers scores, Gil- man capped a six-play drive finding the end zone from 12 yards out. Springdale got the ball back quickly on a Milo Murphy interception and drove 52 yards with Dean scoring on a fiveyard run.
Andrew added a 24- yard scoring run and Gilman a one-yard scor- ing run for the final tallies. Signal caller and senior Andrew had 46 yards rushing on eight carries, while Dean, a junior, had 165 yards on 11 carries. Gilman, a freshman, finished with 127 yards. The Chargers are scheduled to make the short trip to Wellpinit for a 3 p.m. kickoff on Friday, Oct. 9.
