Five local dairy herds placed above the association average in April, according to the report of Dick Pack, tester for the North East Washington Dairy Herd Improvement Association. The association average for the month was 784 pounds of milk and 30.5 pounds of butterfat. Mrs. Ken Bolton of Seattle, sister of Homer Graham, spent the weekend at the Graham home. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. Vance Darling of Colfax, brother-in-law and sister of Mrs. Graham. Finch Woodward got a new Case tractor and drill last week.

The Deer Park South Shopping Center got its flag back, just in time for Memorial Day ceremonies. The 20-foot-long flag, presented to the mall by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, was stolen about two years ago, at the same time when a vandalism spree plagued the mall. It was recovered and returned by an unidentified local resident last week. Besieged with behavior problems at both the elementary and junior high schools, Deer Park School District officials now claim they have the problem under control. District Social Worker Roberta Dahlin told the school board that the Adaptive Behavior Learning Environment program has been “real successful” for students with social, emotional, and behavioral deficiencies. There’s a lot of reasons why Dick and Darlene Ziehnert have been designated the Conservation Family of the Year for 1986, but the heart of all those reasons, Jud Melton of the Spokane County Conservation District points out, is just what the title implies – conservation. The Ziehnerts, who own and operate a sprawling multi-purpose farm of around 500 acres north of Elk, conserve water, energy, and soil through rather inventive means, and as a result, are success stories in the world of farming amidst reports of an otherwise troubled industry.

In the late summer of 1954, Alice Holiday arrived at the Clayton School to begin her teaching career in the Deer Park School District. Last week, more than a half century later, the 90-year-old Holiday, who now lives in Spokane, returned to look at the 90-year-old remodeled schoolhouse, which reopened last September after sitting idle for more than three decades. A Deer Park construction site was the latest locale hit by thieves intent on stealing copper to sell as scrap. A contractor reported that a thief hit his work site and cut and removed more than 250 feet of insulated electrical cable. He valued the stolen copper at about $800. Deer Park School District officials hope to have the plan to change the school board director district configuration in front of the voters this fall. The district plan would carve up the district into four school board districts (there are currently five districts) with the fifth district being an at-large seat.
