Clayton Home Ec. Club met at the Christiansen home Wednesday evening. Mrs. Edith Welch was co-hostess. A delicious pitch-in dinner was served at noon. Mrs. Fay Bolin, home demonstration agent from Colville, gave a very interesting demonstration and talk on improving and beautifying homes. Mrs. George Morasch had a party-shower for Mrs. Dominic Cerenzy and baby on Tuesday. Present were Mrs. Paul Cerenzy, Mrs. Rummer, Mrs. Joe Cerenzy, Mrs. Willie Grief, Mrs. Ida Grief, Mrs. Jim Rock, and Mrs. Arthur (Mrs. Morashch’s mother). Some lovely gifts were given and all had a pleasant time. ELK – Jess Staley and wife motored to Deer Park Wednesday to purchase lumber and to shop.

A handsome macaw, a native of South America, was returned to his owner last week after a brief three-day respite of freedom, but not before his rescuers came just short of giving their all in the effort. A project first broached last winter – paving all of Deer Park streets and byways – will begin in earnest during July, thanks to city council approval of the concept at the May 7 council meeting. At $570,000, the paving and repaving project won’t be peanuts, but since the state requires it be repaid at the modest interest rate of only 3%, most council members apparently believed it was an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed. Deer Park High School senior Scott Maw has been awarded a Rainier Bancorporation Merit Scholarship. Maw was one of six winners selected to receive a full tuition, four-year scholarship. He plans to attend Gonzaga University and major in business.

A small part of the world came together when the Rotary Club of Deer Park played host to a barbeque at Mix Park for 37 exchange students, their local host families and chaperones, and two dozen students from Deer Park High School. The 37 exchange students represented 15 countries, including Colombia, France, Japan, Poland, Bolivia, Spain, and Denmark. Reigning Miss Deer Park Ashley Verzal knows something about looking pretty. She used that beauty knowledge last week to capture the District VII Class 2A javelin championship. Sitting in third place with only one toss remaining, DPHS (Deer Park High School) assistant track coach Zack McGee reminded Verzal to “throw pretty.” Verzal responded with a thing of beauty; a 113-foot, 11-inch effort that scored her the district championship and an automatic berth into this weekend’s state championships. Sunshine Daycare and Preschool in Chattaroy recently earned accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children as part of the Spokane County United Way child care accreditation program. “This accreditation is a confirmation for our parents and the community that our children are getting the best care and high quality learning experiences,” said Lynn Schluter, program director and co-owner of Sunshine Daycare.
