80 Years Ago

Loon Lake was represented at the circus in Deer Park by nearly every family except the Folletts. Hope we didn’t miss too much. Tommy Gardner, who will be a freshman at Deer Park High School next year, is taking trombone lessons from Mr. Markham. Good going, Tommy New teachers on the staff of Deer Park and Clayton schools are Miss Edina E. Wall and Mrs. Nellie Gardner. Miss Wall comes from Coulee City High School and has been employed to fill the high school English-library position left vacant by the resignation of Miss Dolores Castle, who will enter radio broadcasting work in Spokane. Mrs. Gardner has taught in Loon Lake grade school the past three years. She will replace Miss Twila Erickson as Clayton primary teacher.

 A crowd comprised of people of all ages, shapes, sizes, and conditions of physical fitness huffed, puffed, and grunted its way round Loon Lake’s five-and-a-half mile course during the Third Annual Loonsday Walk June 7. Participants – numbering 1,000-plus – ranged from small babies pushed in strollers to a man and woman both in their late 70s. We had two visitors this week from the Department of Ecology in Olympia. Kim McKee and Allan Moore will be heading up the state programs on Lake Restoration and weed control. They took a boat ride on Eloika Lake and spent about two hours going over the lake’s problems with the president of the Lake Association, Dave Van Dort. In what has become both a happy as well as tearful celebration every year, Deer Park School District’s kindergarten students were capped with mortarboards and handed “diplomas” last week at Clayton School.

 Deer Park officials backed up their claims with cash when it came to the city pool. Outgoing mayor Michael Wolfe set aside $40,000 in this year’s budget for pool upgrade, including a new coat of paint for the pool shell. A burglar forced his way into a Deer Park construction trailer overnight on June 12 and made off with a $3,500 pipe laser. An employee for White Water Creek Construction told Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputy Dave Morris that the suspect pulled apart temporary security fencing around the trailer and broke through a door into the office half of the trailer. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Department has determined that Deer Park’s Karla W. Trapp was not a victim of homicide concerning her death on June 6. Her husband, John W. Trapp, told investigators that his wife fell in the bathtub on June 5 and he put her to bed. He discovered her dead body the following day
