80 Years Ago

A party was given at the Grange hall for Mr. and Mrs. Willie Weyland, newlyweds of Elk. The gift was a purse of money. Dancing was enjoyed and lunch served. Their many friends wish them every success and happiness. 

Since the really hot days, one thinks of lakes and going swimming. Although it is too hot to work, some are thinking about the second cutting of hay and some grain is being cut.  

Art Stevenson seems to be an unlucky guy lately. Last week he smashed a finger and this week he split one on the sickle. 

40 Years Ago

The very real possibility that both Riverside and Deer Park Neighborhood Centers would have to merge at a new location has been known for some time, Spokane County Neighborhood Centers Director Tom Pleas said last week. “With all the cutbacks we were experiencing,” Pleas said, “we’ve known for some time that we can’t continue to operate the two centers up there independently of one another. The only sensible thing to do was to merge them.”

Dawn Hale, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Hale, will be leaving shortly for Sweden where she is an exchange student. 

It’s a first for the Deer Park VFW Auxiliary, and a first for the state of Washington in many years; a Deer Park student has walked away with top honors in the Auxiliary's annual patriotic art contest. Bryan Robertson, 18, who graduated from Deer Park High School last month, was recently notified he has won fifth place in the nation VFW Auxiliary contest held in Kansas City, Mo., and first place in the state of Washington.

In what was supposed to be a partnership has now become a winner-take-all contest with the prize being the Deer Park Civic Center. The new plan for the building came after Deer Park Arts Commission Secretary Denny Lippert told the Deer Park City Council last week that any partnership with the Deer Park Civic Center Association was unworkable because of funding obstacles.

Deer Park native Sara Williams returns to the familiar locales of her upbringing on a mid-August book tour, highlighting her second novel "The Serenoa Scandal.” Williams was a magazine writer in Seattle and a reporter and columnist with Fort Myers (Fla.) News Press. Her mystery novels were inspired by stories she covered. 

Deer Park students will be able to sleep in another 20 minutes this school year. The Deer Park School Board agreed to a plan that will start classes at all Deer Park schools 20 minutes later than last year.
