Thanks, Deer Park! I want to thank the folks of Deer Park and vicinity for the overwhelming majority they gave me in Tuesday’s primary election. I know that their wholehearted support was directly responsible for my receiving the Democratic nomination for County Commissioner in the First District. The unanimity of the vote was an expression of confidence and a personal endorsement which I shall never forget. — Earl D. Mix

Farm Security funds for all programs in northern Spokane and southern Stevens counties were appropriated for the new fiscal year, July 1. Although funds for five-year operating goods loans and 40-year farm ownership loans are about the same as those budgeted last year, money for small water facility loans was substantially increased.

Norseth and daughter, Laila, arrived a week ago from New York City. Dr. and Mrs. Lewis F. Hatch and daughters, Carna and Christine, are visiting from Austin, Texas, where Dr. Hatch is professor of chemistry at the University of Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Harald Westby and son, Kenneth, of Deer Park, also enjoyed the reunion.

Deer Park’s fast and furious water rate hike brouhaha, which seemingly died without a whimper when the city council unexpectedly passed a new rate schedule at its June 18 meeting, may be given a new lease on life at tonight’s council meeting. Mayor Robert Brown said last week he intends to introduce some “new information I’d like the council to consider.”

The number of candidates for Stevens County Sheriff went from two to four last week with the announcements of Vern Holter and Larry Miller that they will seek the office. Holter of Kettle Falls is a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and the son of Dutch Holter who was the sheriff for Stevens County for 12 years. Miller, a six-year veteran of the Marine Corps, described himself as “hard-nosed” when it comes to dealing with criminals.

Deer Park Family Care Clinic officials are hoping to begin construction on an urgent care center on the south end of the city within the next couple of weeks. Construction will start once clinic officials finish the permit process. The new 8,500-square-foot facility will be located near Deer Park Vision and will be staffed by two doctors, nurses, and support staff.

A 21-year-old Deer Park man was arrested on July 10 after a Spokane County Sheriff’s deputy traffic stop netted methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and a plethora of weapons and ammunition.

City officials, who worried how spectators at the public fireworks display on the 4th of July would react to the crackdown on personal fireworks, could take a deep breath instead. Mayor Robert Whisman was overjoyed at how spectators, for the most part, obeyed the new rules that included the banning of personal fireworks at Perrins Field.
