80 Years Ago

Miss Ivy Gardner has taken over the teaching of music in the Loon Lake area and is giving lessons in the school basement. She teaches piano and also plans to organize a band for the school children.


Students of Deer Park High School will hold their annual work day Tuesday, Oct. 8. The purpose of the day is two-fold, to give students actual job experience and to raise funds for student body activities during the year. 


Last Thursday, a farewell party for Mrs. Bryce Ault was given by the Young Women’s Bible class at the home of Mrs. Cecil Mullenix. Besides members of the class, those present were Mrs. E.W. Heubach, Mrs. Claude Cowdy, Mrs. Erwin Lang, and Mrs. Merald Yingst. Mrs. Ault was presented with a gift. 


40 Years Ago

A rural non-high school district could soon be headed the way of other, similar districts of the recent past: disbandment and consolidation with a larger school district. That may be the best of several options available, according to several reports presented to school board members last week. Alternatively, updating the two schools in the Nine Mile Falls School District could cost anywhere from $1.5-$5 million.


Riverside High School senior Stephanie Ressa, the daughter of Gene Ressa and Jackie Stern, will lunch with Gov. Booth Gardner on Oct. 18. The lunch date is part of Ressa’s election as governor of Girls State, a mock state government, last June at Central Washington University. 


Elk Pioneer Association opened its meeting on Sept. 29 with a discussion of a haunted house for Halloween. Research has revealed that insurance premiums are too high for such a plan to be feasible, and the group has decided to abandon the Halloween theme and move in the direction of a family dance.

Broadband is coming to Springdale thanks to a $529,340 USDA Rural Development Community Connect Grant to EcliptixNet Broadband Inc. A ceremonial check was presented to EcliptixNet Founder Jeff Tamietti and Springdale Mayor Mike Pammler on Oct. 6 in the city park. Presenting the grant was USDA Rural Development State Director Jon DeVaney and Congresswoman Cathy McMorris. 


The Deer Park City Council hopes to have a decision on who will take control of the Civic Center by the end of the month. The arts commission had made a proposal earlier this year in which they would become partners with the Deer Park Civic Center Association in running the 80-year-old building. 


A north Spokane County resident likely interrupted a burglary of her home on Oct. 2 but didn’t call for help because she thought she might be misusing the 911 emergency line. The victim arrived at her home on North Tomey Road about 2 p.m. and discovered a man standing in her backyard.
