With all but one member of the team returning from last spring, Riverside softball Head Coach Roy Rose has high hopes for the squad this spring.
New to the Rams varsity this season are freshman Zoe Winterroth, sister of the lone senior from the class of 2025, Kaylee Winterroth, who is now playing volleyball at the Colleges of Spokane, and Nicole Motteshard, who was a Junior Varsity squad member last spring.
In their first four matchups of the season, Rose said he has had the luxury of two dependable pitchers in Lindsey Hudson-Wayne and Makenna Distad to lean on, as well as a pair of catchers in Addy Rice and Izzy Cotner. He called Cotner "the motor of the team," an athlete whom he could play confidently at any position. Rose praised her ability to hit for both average and power from both sides of the plate. He also highlighted the "natural athleticism" of Paislee Jenkinson.
Rose commented on the early non-league schedule against a pair of larger schools, West Valley of Yakima (Washington, 4A), and Lake City (Idaho, 6A), that his squad was more competitive than the scoreboard indicated.
He cited his team’s improved pitching and their ability to hit the ball well as reasons they could edge out Medical Lake for the league’s top spot. Colville lost eight seniors, but their long-standing tradition of a competitive program could make them a competitor to watch as well, Rose said.
The Rams will resume play at home on Thursday, April 2, against Colfax at noon and Kettle Falls at 4 p.m.
