A Memorial Mass for Guadalupe "Lupe" Chau Wehr, age 80, of Deer Park, Washington, will be celebrated on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Presentation Catholic Church, 6th Street, Deer Park. Interment will follow at Holy Redeemer Cemetery. The Rosary will be prayed on Friday, February 20, at 5:00 p.m. at the same church.
Lupe passed away on February 4, 2026, at home, surrounded by her family. She spent 46 years living in Deer Park. She graduated from University High School in Spokane Valley in 1966. Lupe worked for many years as a prep cook at Beverly Healthcare Northpoint and later retired from Avalon Healthcare in Spokane. She was an active member of St. Mary's Altar and Roses Society. In retirement, Lupe found great joy in tending her large garden, playing cards, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Lupe was born on December 13, 1945, in Cárdenas, Cuba, to Julio Chau and Felicia González. She came from a large family and remained connected to both those living and those who had passed.
In 1962, Lupe and her nephews were part of the Pedro Pan flights to the United States. She was among 64 Cuban children who lived at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Colfax, Washington, and attended St. John's Academy, where she was lovingly cared for by Monsignor Cornelio Stefani. During this time, she met the Sprow family of Spokane Valley, who welcomed her into their home during high school and some college courses, affectionately calling her "their gift from Castro."
Lupe met her husband, Darrell, in 1968, and together they had three sons and nine grandchildren:
Philip and his children Gracie, Olivia, and Lucas (with wife Danielle);
Daniel and his children Hailee and Dane (with wife Heide);
John and his children Logan and Chase (with former wife Sonja, who remained close to Lupe), and Matthew and Vincent (with his wife, Maria).
Lupe lived a long and productive life and will be sorely missed by her family and friends. Rest well.
